Globose candillon

Gluconiidae bonbecus, candillion family

“Rare bugs, as most candillons are. They smell like sugar to attract smaller bugs and catch them on their sticky thoraxes to eat them. Unfortunately, the sugar smell also attracts lots of bigger animals that will gladly snack on them. Not Evolution’s finest hour, I’m afraid.”

“A whiff of this fellow is enough to take me back to the confectioneries of my homeland, laid here and about in the bustling marketplaces I used to waste time in. I would almost let myself take a bite of the devilish memory jogger… if the thought of eating a bug didn’t return my stomach...”

“...... I need to find a replacement before Echo notices.”

Noisomous centimane

Scutilugdunidae putris, mortyapod family

“Rancid. Aggressive and eat anything that falls in their territory. If the corpse smell didn’t knock you out, then the sight of their face and mandibles will. They’re strong enough to break walls and gnaw through steel. Needless to say, these rank very high in my list of coolest bugs. Highly considering dying to one of them someday.”

“Encountering these demons once sounds hair-raising enough, but I had the misfortune of having to protect my skin against centimanes TWICE now!! I feel bad for all the water I wasted showering, but I had to get the foul stench off me somehow. I also feel bad about the whole… “making children eat their own parent’s corpse” ordeal… But the buggers didn’t seem to mind their progenitor being dead… Hm.”

“I’m sure these guys aren’t too bad once you get to know them. Until then they sure are the worst.”

Common shellmi

Cornu platythorax, hollowshell family

“Fun little guys. They’re like snails except not at all. They’re much closer to ants, and as they grow they excrete calcium that forms a round shell around their bodies. They persist a long time after the shellmi dies too, so you tend to see lots of discarded shells in Eolian forests. They’re docile and eat little so they make good pets if you give them a hamster wheel to roll in.”

“Bloodthirsty monsters with heavy, indestructible armor, incredible speeds and a soul-piercing stare!! Lord be my witness I would not dare wish an encounter with this beast upon my worst enemy! But perhaps their most horrifying weapon is how, for but an instant, you can see your reflection in their iridescent shell… the judgemental gaze of the self may not leave flesh wounds, but can inflict a paralysis unmatched by the strongest venom.”

“I’m still waiting for my coffee.”
